Architect of World Trade Center

Minoru Yamasaki
, (born December 1, 1912; died February 7, 1986):

"I feel this way about it. World trade means world peace and consequently the World Trade Center buildings in New York ... had a bigger purpose than just to provide room for tenants. The World Trade Center is a living symbol of man's dedication to world peace ... beyond the compelling need to make this a monument to world peace, the World Trade Center should, because of its importance, become a representation of man's belief in humanity, his need for individual dignity, his beliefs in the cooperation of men, and through cooperation, his ability to find greatness."

The USA Patriot Act
Patriot Act's scope, secrecy ensnare innocent
San Francisco Chronicle, Sept. 8, 2002
342 pages long, it amends 15 different laws. Hastily approved by Congress and signed by Bush Oct. 26, 2001 after little debate, it dramatically increased federal search and surveillance powers.   The act scales back safeguards Congress imposed after 1970s revelations that the FBI, CIA and other agencies unlawfully spied on law-abiding citizens.

The Center for Democracy and Technology discusses the Patriot Act and outlines ways it changed existing laws.

The CDT has posted the entire Patriot Act text in PDF form.  (You need the free Adobe Acrobat reader to open this.)

"... the Massachusetts cities of Cambridge, Northampton and Amherst and the township of Leverett, as well as the town of Carrboro, N.C., all passed resolutions that call the USA Patriot Act a threat to the civil rights of the residents of their communities." - from ABCNews.

Secret Deportation Hearings NYT, free registration required:

Aug. 26, 2002, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, in Cincinnati, ruled that the Bush administration illegally held hundreds of deportation hearings in secret.

Excerpt from the court ruling: "The executive branch seeks to uproot people's lives, outside the public eye and behind a closed door. Democracies die behind closed doors. The First Amendment, through a free press, protects the people's right to know that their government acts fairly, lawfully and accurately in deportation proceedings. When government begins closing doors, it selectively controls information rightfully belonging to the people. Selective information is misinformation."

More on the same ruling:

Secrecy Is Our Enemy - NYT - free reg. req'd.
Sept. 2, 2002, Judge Keith [United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit] wrote an opinion, handed down last Monday by a three-judge panel in Cincinnati, that clarified and reaffirmed some crucially important democratic principles that have been in danger of being discarded since the terrorist attacks last Sept. 11.
