|| is your host a reseller? A host company maintains the server that your Web site will be stored on. They are sometimes called Web Presence Providers, but most often just "hosts." (An ISP is your Internet Service Provider - the company you use to connect to the Internet. Hosts and ISPs are often confused. Sometimes a company will do both, but they are separate terms.) If your host has problems with its servers, you have problems with your site. So, it is important to find a reputable company that does daily backups, has reliable 99.9% up time, and provides free, (and toll free) timely, 24 hour technical support for any questions or problems you may have. Site hosting costs depend on the size of your site, whether you will need secure servers for credit card transactions, how much traffic your site will generate, whether you want audio and video capabilities, and other considerations. The least expensive cost for basic plans for small- to medium-sized sites generally runs between $15-$25/month with set up fees of $30 to $50. It can get more expensive if you need to accept credit card transactions on your site, or are interested in video capabilities, etc. $19.95 to $24.95 is the range to count on for good service for a basic small business site. There are thousands of host companies looking for your business. Shop around, and try to negotiate. Try one that sounds good, fits your budget, and answers your e-mails and phone calls in a reasonable time. Call their support line at odd hours to see how quickly they answer. If you are experienced, support may not be that important. If you're new to the Web, 24 x 7 toll free human telephone support may be very important. The reputable companies will offer 30-day money back guarantees, and some have 90-day money back guarantees. You can always change hosts if you are not happy. Signing up for 3 months is the most you should do, until you are sure you are happy. If I ever decide to be a reseller, I will be sorry I said this; but, why go with a reseller, and have a middleman, when you can go with the place that actually has the servers? One way to see if the hosting company you are considering is a reseller: Enter their domain name - for example 1hostnet.com - in the search box at geektools.com. Scroll down and see what the domain servers are. In this case it is, 9NetAve. So, I would think you should just go with 9NetAve., and skip the middleman. Better service, usually more experienced personnel who can answer your question faster, without having to check "upstairs." Also, I believe the source has more accountability. The reseller will always blame problems on the company who owns the servers. |
This site is
hosted by Interland.net However, that was 99,
and now it's 2002. Interland's service has deteriorated, and
they have raised their prices while lowering features.
